A young couple who see their home as both a place to relax and a space to gather with close friends. The social area was designed around these two important aspects, combining sophistication and a neutral palette of materials, such as wood and light tones, with touches of color. The kitchen and service areas were planned with functionality and practicality as priorities.
The clients wanted a spacious apartment that would highlight the views and social spaces, with light and timeless finishes. From the beginning, it was very important for them to have a comfortable living room for relaxing and watching television, as well as a large dining table for hosting friends and family, while still maintaining three bedrooms in the apartment. This guided the layout of the spaces.
With these goals in mind, we designed a flexible room that can function either as a home office or a guest bedroom, and a second bedroom that currently serves as a guest room but can become a future child’s bedroom. We also took advantage of the existing window frame system to define the social area without compromising the spaciousness of the living room, maximizing the use of the space as a whole. Moving away from conventional solutions, we created a suspended portal structure to support the television.
This is a renovation of a newly delivered apartment with no previous residents. When the property was purchased, it had two suites, one of them being the master suite with two bathrooms. We opened the door of one of the suite bathrooms to the circulation area and created an additional bedroom. We also expanded the master suite to create a larger closet area, reducing the size of the storage room to achieve this gain. The living room previously had a balcony separated by glass doors, and we integrated the spaces.
We only made the necessary electrical and plumbing modifications to accommodate the new layout. The biggest change was in the master bathroom, where the toilet location was altered. To avoid interfering with the apartment below, we installed a wall-hung toilet and routed the plumbing through the wall until it reached the existing sewage connection point.
The inspiration for the project came mainly from the clients' preferences, including leather extured fabrics. The clients own a horse farm, and the wife works in marketing for a fashion brand, giving her extensive knowledge and appreciation for fabrics.
Having the most spacious living room possible was definitely the main factor guiding much of the layout decisions. Another important element was the light wood finish, which the clients loved as soon as they saw it.
The biggest challenge of the project was the execution of the envisioned suspended portal structure. It required teamwork and collaboration between several professionals to achieve the desired result.
