This former attic space was originally converted to living space in the 1980ies. The structural restoration, led by EMMA B. HOME and executed by HS Architekten started in 2018 and was completed by February 2020. The Facade, Windows and structural elements of the loft had to comply with the heritage-protection and preservation orders of the City of Hamburg.
The Penthouse was built and furnished for a private client with high-standard aesthetic, demanding a cozy yet modern family residence in the center of the hanseatic city. Finding the balance between minimalistic modern elements, such as the Skyframe in the sitting room, allowing an unhindered view of the city, and integrating existing structures was one of the biggest challenges for the project team around Interior Designer, Emma Brunckhorst, Founder of the Boutique Interior Design Studio EMMA B. HOME.
The Penthouse was fully air-conditioned and separated into a private- and a living area. The open Kitchen, which is fully customized with high-end materials, such as a terrazzo stone countertop and solid brass handles, merges into the living room by a bespoke two-sided bar element, which also acts as a corner seating unit around the table. Remarkable are small details in the mid-century influenced furniture, such as the turnable stone plate on the dining table, which allows a food-sharing culture during meals. A piece of modern art in the living room can be electrically moved to reveal a hidden TV, once again finding balance between cozy living space and high-standard gadgets. Leading on to the office is a hidden door, which is concealed by the tapestry next to the large, comfortable lounge-area with extra seat-depth.
The courage to combine juxtaposing wall colors and mix fabrics with different textures and patterns in a high-class surrounding is characteristic for the Team of EMMA B. HOME.
The private rooms are separated from the living area by an industrial glass-steel element leading into a minimalistic dark green hallway, which catches light by integrated overhead lighting fixtures and two skylights, flooding it in natural light. The two Master Bathrooms are held in muted colors, one with a minimalistic flair and industrial design influences and the other with selected tiles that appear like bamboo, building a bridge between modern layout and Japanese spa feel. All rounded off with a neroassoluto washbasin. Both bathrooms have integrated waterproof TVs for a luxury multimedia experience. Remarkable is the guest bathroom, which has a revolving, patterned wallpaper and three-dimensional geometric tiles in pink. Details, such as the matched washbasin on the antique vanity and the patchwork of vintage frames and decorative objects round off the eclectic highlight of the penthouse.
Floors are held in a muted steamed oak laid out in a hexagonal pattern in the private rooms and hallway and in broad planks in the sitting room. A Gallery track system was used for the lighting fixtures allowing an adaption of light scenes depending on current requirements. The Penthouse is a showcase for EMMA B. HOME’s work with a bold mix of color and texture with a base line of design classics and minimalistic, architectural structures. The sky’s the limit.
