Piraeus Tower SA

Sails:

The Tower, 50 years after its construction remains unfinished and closed and requires a complete transformation. Our proposal aimes to bring it back to life by designing a new facade for the Tower and for its base.

Our first associative reference, an idea that we gradually transform to an architectural design, springs from the seafront urban landscape and the vicinity of the Tower to the sea. We imagine sails moving by the light sea breeze, and we use this as our inspiration to create projections that accentuate the horizontal and bring a sense of continuous movement from one side to the other. Inspired by key words such as elegant, in motion, contemporary, in dialogue to the waterfront, bioclimatic, open to the city, we aim to bring the Tower back to the present making it a landmark with a distinct personality.

Tower:

Wishing to accentuate the unhindered view, we proposehorizontal cantilevers that surround each floor and become the basic elements of shading, as they offer maximum protection for the facades. The geometry of the cantilevers is concave, with emphasis placed to their corners. The cantilevers vary from floor to floor as they follow a rotation around an axis. The rotation has as a result the differentiation of the projection’s span of the horizontal architectural components, creating the impression of an aethereal and differentiated image from floor to floor. Every four floors the pattern of rotation is repeated.

Base:

The Base opens up to the city. Realizing the great potential to open up the closed form by creating balconies for movement and siting, we allow the glass facades to explore the magnificent sea view and we place staircases for independent movement from one balcony to the other. To visually integrate the Base to the Tower, we use the same system of white horizontal projections. In this way, the architectural elements and the characteristic rotation of the cantilevers of the Tower also apply to the Base.
