Plaza del Torico

The Plaza del Torico in Teruel is at once a waypoint and a destination: a redistributor of the city’s constant urban flow and a place where the same people gather, to meet and socialize. The reorganisation of this urban space also called for a solution that would both be a step towards the future and a noble salute to the past, respecting the heritage of the historic city in which it stands.

The centrepiece of this project is its distinctive pavement: the 1230 thin LED light fixtures embedded within granite cobblestones and arranged along the same lines traced by rainwater as it falls, and slips from terracotta roofs, running through the empty plaza like some Nordic braided river. A delicate, mystical aura emanates from the square after sun-down, excessive illumination having been avoided . The intensity and frequency of the light fixtures vary throughout the square - the central Torico fountain is encircled by luminous lines, while the Fondero and Somero cisterns and the Arca Secreta are half as lit in order to highlight their archaeological value.
