In Wayzata, Minnesota, Strand Design organized a family home around a concrete plinth set into a sloped site. The plinth takes up the grade and gives the house a firm base; from it, cantilevered volumes and deep overhangs reach out over a covered porch and the lawn.
A long concrete wall shapes the approach and shelters the pool lawn from the street, and a concrete stair leads up to the entry. Above the base, dark cladding and warm wood accents define a set of boxy volumes. Beside the pool, an open pavilion with a cedar ceiling gives the family a shaded outdoor room.
Inside, tall black doors open the living room directly to the pavilion, and a long kitchen with a dark island sits beneath a timber ceiling. A recreation room holds a ping-pong table and a graffiti mural, and the baths range from a soaking tub and wood vanity to black tile with a painted mural wall, giving each room its own character within a calm overall frame. Interiors are by Dwelling Designs and the landscape is by Outdoor Escapes.
