The study concerns the design of a pocket park with a children’s playground in an empty lot on the main pedestrian street in the mountainous city of Karpenisi. The lot is located at a key urban point which has a direct functional and visual connection with the city’s central square and main church.
The entrance to the small park happens through a wide staircase, which creates a smooth transition from the pedestrian street and at the same time a seating area with a view to the park and the playground.
Landscape is a key element of the design, providing - necessary during the morning/midday hours of the summer months - shade and a pleasant microclimate, while at an urban scale it creates a green zone next to the pedestrian street and the church. At the same time, due to the placement of cypress trees on the boundary with the neighboring building, a green wall is created next to this adjacent wall which will no longer be visible from the city's central square. In the rest of the terrain, oaks and pines are proposed, as typical trees of the area, which will contribute to creating a sense of place within the urban fabric.
In addition to the planting, the pocket park will have play equipment for children. A safety floor in the form of rubber anti-vibration tiles is placed in the play equipment area, while the rest of the playground surface will be paved with pebbles. Within the pebble zone, round concrete steps will be foundare created, functioning also as some sort of play equipment.
