In 2018, the Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust commissioned Pieter Mathews, of Mathews + Associates Architects, to design a bicycle stand.
This piece of urban furniture was originally designed to stand in front of the historic Skuinshuis in Stellenbosch.
The concept of the bicycle stand was to celebrate the centenary of the Department of Afrikaans/Nederland of the University of Stellenbosch.
Afrikaans poetry is represented by three renowned South African poets who graduated from the University of Stellenbosch. These poets are Lina Spies, DJ Opperman and Adam Small (D Liit Hon Causa).
An abstracted profile of each poet is arranged around a central axis, creating spaces for bicycles to be suspended from.
The poetic stand serves to activate the urban space when in use or not. The bicycle stand was manufactured from laser-cut mild steel and is powder coated in a dark grey which stands in stark contrast to the predominately white architecture of the urban environment.
On June 1st, 2019, The Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust donated the Poetic Stand to the Pniël Museum.
