The future school building in Maia Bassa is located within a large area of the municipality of Merano, bounded by Via Parrocchia, Via Trogmann, and Via Roma. This entire area has been identified as the future center of a new educational and cultural hub.
The hub will consist of two new middle schools in Italian and German, a triple gymnasium, the renovation and extension of two primary schools within an existing building, the Italian music school in the current parish building, and a new building serving as a cafeteria.
From an urban planning perspective, the project proposes a comprehensive reorganization of the school campus and the urban spaces adjacent to Via Piave and Via Parrocchia, with the aim of redesigning the garden between the existing schools and enhancing the quality of the public space.
The design choice was to create a single square-shaped volume with a flat roof emerging from a new green podium: the ground floor of the school, which accommodates the more public functions. In this way, the project has a reduced visual impact on the surrounding context.
