School prototype for Paraguay: flexible, educational architecture with local identity
IDOM has developed an innovative prototype for schools in Paraguay that redefines the relationship between pedagogy and architecture. The project offers an adaptable model with a strong identity and an advanced vision of educational innovation for different locations throughout the country.
Breaking with the traditional structure of closed classrooms and linear corridors, the proposal opts for fluid, interconnected spaces open to the landscape. Every corner of the campus is designed to be a place for learning, encouraging curiosity and interaction among students. This approach aims to transform the educational experience by creating environments that spark a passion for learning and promote play as a pedagogical tool.
Drawing inspiration from traditional Paraguayan architecture, the design incorporates elements of the kuláta jovái, a traditional rural construction method that uses natural ventilation and shade to provide thermal comfort. The concept of an educational campus evokes the first Guaraní settlements, where buildings were arranged across the landscape to create a "mini-city of learning" that strengthens the connection between the school and its surroundings.
The project's central focus is sustainability. To reduce radiation, passive strategies such as cross ventilation, solar chimneys, and solar protection using perimeter slabs, brick, and gravel roofs are incorporated. Additionally, plans include rainwater harvesting for irrigation and creating shade circuits with vegetation. Depending on the location, Provençal wells for natural cooling may also be used.
This prototype responds to current educational needs and paves the way for a more open, flexible, and sustainable model that can adapt to future challenges and Paraguay's territorial diversity.
