Qingpu Vehicle Inspection Station: Industrial Building Renovation

The project is located in the Qingpu Industrial Zone. It was originally an old electronic factory. The building has been renovated and repurposed to house the Qingpu Vehicle Inspection and Repair Station, as well as office space for Yinke New Energy Technology Company.

The building retains its original steel structure. The interior has been completely renovated, and the exterior wall cladding has been replaced with new corrugated metal panels. A new building entrance has been designed, and the interior circulation has been reorganized. On the north facade, where the main entrance is located, folded perforated aluminum panels create an interface whose transparency changes over time.

On the west side of the building, several large trees stand. In response, an outdoor colonnade was designed facing them, with sliding doors as the exterior wall. On nice days, the building interface can be fully opened, creating a pleasant space in close connection with nature.

The main entrance area on the ground floor is divided into two halls to meet functional demands, occupied separately by different users yet belonging to the same enterprise. Hence, the core design challenge lies in creating a spatially partitioned layout while embodying shared corporate culture. The two halls serve respectively as the reception hall for vehicle inspection and maintenance, and the exhibition lobby leading to the administrative offices upstairs. These two independent functional areas are separated by a long car display platform, yet they remain visually connected as a whole through transparency. The inspection and repair reception hall features a square-circulation space around the service counter, which not only provides a relatively quiet waiting area for customers but also offers a view of the car collection displayed in the adjacent foyer. This organizational relationship, where functions are separated but visual experience is shared, creates an overall spatial atmosphere that embodies the company's unique car culture.

The upper-floor activity and office areas feature warm wood tones, while locally incorporating bright colors that echo the design of the main hall. The interior space creates a relatively relaxed feeling, whereas the corrugated metal panels used on the building's exterior give it a strong industrial character. The design intentionally creates a spatial experience of contrast between the interior and exterior.

The industrial factory buildings in this area were originally planned in 2000. Against the backdrop of China's rapid urban development and renewal, they now face industrial and spatial transformation. The Qingpu Vehicle Inspection Station, transformed from an old factory, stands as a symbol of this area's transformation with a new look of industrial architecture.
