The use of wood is prominent within the design and was used for the structure, exterior, and interior finishes. The house implements green design principals and takes advantage of natural ventilation and lighting. It features operable windows on all four façades and all three levels of the house. The home also has an operable skylight at the highest point of the house for ventilation purposes. A roof overhang on the south façade allows for direct sunlight to penetrate the home during winter, and avoid heat gain during the summer. The south façade is generously glazed and allows natural sunlight to penetrate throughout the entire day. All the windows are double-glazed argon filled with Douglas fir frames. Bamboo composite flooring was used because bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource. Dual-flush toilets and low flow shower heads assist in the conservation of water. The home also is equipped with a high efficiency furnace, as well as an on-demand tankless water heater that only turns on when hot water is being used. The “open” concept utilized for this residence creates a sense that the space is quite large despite its very modest square footage.
