Located on a spectacular site overlooking a surfing hotspot, the 5500 square foot residence is organized around a central sunken courtyard. The lower portion of the house is embedded in the hillside with a light-filled “panorama room” at the front of the property. This strategy maximizes views to the coast and allows the residence to accommodate the large program with the presence of a single-story dwelling from many vantage points on the sprawling site.
Rising out of the ground and cantilevered toward the ocean is an “L” shaped living space, consisting of the kitchen, living room, and master bedroom. Open-air stairs divide the more public and private areas of the scheme, setting up spatial sequence that moves back and forth between intimately nested spaces along the courtyard and stunning views of the ocean below.
