New construction completed in November of 2017, the project is a 2,700 sf three-story private residence located in a quiet neighborhood - Normal Heights, San Diego. With a valley on the back side, the design of the house embraces the amazing opportunities provided by the landscape and opened up the spaces to the nature surrounding it, blurring the threshold of exterior & interior.
The design of the house aims at creating a series of spaces that provides more than the function that they were tasked with: Equipped with a home theater and a full functioning open kitchen & bar, the basement becomes an extension of the living and gathering area for the owners & guests. The bedroom in the basement has a platform bed made out of white oak, which was inspired by the owner's memory of living in Japan, as well as a big window that provides charming views out to the valley. The stairs ties the three floors together with a screen made out of vertical black metal slats, the white walls around become the perfect canvas where the owners can display artwork that they collected while traveling around the world. The main living room has a panelized feature wall with the TV integrated and a built-in kitchen island where the owners can host gatherings with friends and family, or use the terrace right out side of the living room and enjoy the view. The master bedroom also has a millwork bench integrated, providing shelving & seating as well as display, adding another layer of potential to the space.
Given the homeowners' busy life style which demands a lot of traveling, this house became a resort where they can decompress and appreciate slow living again, and enjoy time with family and friends. The whole building is solar powered and the exterior is cladded with recyclable rain-screen, allowing it to be more sustainable and appreciative to the beautiful environment that it is surrounded by.
