San Sebastian elementary school is a private educational institution aided with public funds, founded in 1997. It was initially located in the historical center of Melipilla, a midsize agricultural city approximately 80km distance from Santiago capital city of Chile. After 10 years of activity, it has become one of the most recognized schools in the area, increasing the number of students to a situation that turned its facilities obsolete and undersized. After renting different locations next to the existent building in order to expand its needs, operative problems appeared immediately, so the owner looked for a new and better location in the urban boundaries. The 7.881m2 chosen site is at the extreme east side of the city, facing a privileged view of Chilean central valley and the Andes Mountains. Our client had a clear Idea of the functioning scheme for his needs based on a “s” shaped configuration that was the base for the architectural proposal. Openings and windows frame the natural view and respond according to sun orientation. Based in this principle, classrooms face east and south avoiding direct sun radiation, while west and north facades are protected by circulations and a metallic screen surface that acts as a filter. The plan configuration allows the existence of two patios with different functions: one public expressed with prefab concrete floor facing the valley; and the other more intimate expressed with in a grass surface, based on central valley historical house patios scheme. The two floor height underlines the dominant horizontality of the landscape. The 7,17m regular with of the concrete building is extended trough the site braking in corners and adapting the façade criteria as a result. One of the main restrains of the project was cost, which was finally achieved to U$D 600/m2.
