An award winning addition to the Johannesburg Skyline

An award winning addition to the Johannesburg skyline, Sandton City is the first project in Southern Africa to utilise Texlon® ETFE. Sandton City’s prolific expansion is amongst the most environmentally conscious projects in South Africa and the Protea Court roof demonstrates elegant design and the revolutionary capabilities of Vector Foiltec’s Texlon® ETFE.

Sandton City’s 1.77 billion Rand upgrade transforms the shopping centre’s initial 185,000 m² (2008) into 215,000 m² of retail, office and leisure space. Incorporating Texlon® ETFE into the design of the Protea Court roof ensures Sandton City is one of Africa’s greenest shopping centers and reinforces its status as South Africa’s premier retail and leisure facility.

Designed by RTKL in the united Kingdom and implemented by MDS Architecture in South Africa, the striking new Protea Court roof consists of 184 double layer cushions made up of white, clear and fritted Texlon® ETFE foil. The cushions are permanently inflated with compressed air, ensuring wind resistance and insulation, and restrained within profiled aluminium extrusions which are curved to the contour of the steelwork. The steelwork, a complex structure incorporating beams spanning up to 27 m, recently saw joint contractors Aveng Grinaker-LTA and WBHO winning top honours at the Steel Awards 2011.
