The client, an artist, asked the architect to design a work/display space, which would also enclose pool equipment housed in an existing garage. The architect and client decided to demolish the garage, but build on its footprint, to avoid moving the pool equipment and major disruption of the site.
To maximize cost efficiency the architect proposed a simple frame building using off-the-shelf components. Trusses, wall structure, doors, siding, trim and roofing are all of stock materials in stock sizes. Roof trusses, made of construction grade 2 x 4’s and normally hidden, are exposed and painted, adding light, shadow, dimension, and detail while avoiding the cost of ceiling materials. The floor is concrete slab-on-grade, sand-finished and scored.
Early on, the client and architect decided to favor ventilation and views over north light. Hence, the major orientation is to the southwest toward the client’s property and away from the neighbors. Wide overhangs add adequate sun shading.
The work/display space is completely enclosed, while the adjacent pool equipment and outdoor storage is covered but open to the air.
This artist's studio was built on the site of a former garage, which housed new pool equipment. The client asked the architect to design a work/display space that would also enclose the existing pool equipment and avoid major disruption of the site. The architect and client decided to demolish the garage and build on its footprint.
The architect proposed a simple frame building that would maximize cost-efficiency using off-the-shelf components. Roof trusses, made of construction grade 2 x 4's and normally hidden, are exposed and painted, adding light, shadow, dimension and detail while avoiding the cost of ceiling materials. The floor is concrete slab-on-grade, sand-finished and scored.
For this particular site, the client and architect decided to favor ventilation and views over north light. The major orientation is to the southwest toward the client's property and prevailing breezes and away from the neighbors. Wide overhangs provide adequate sun shading.
The work/display space is completely enclosed while the adjacent pool equipment and outdoor storage is covered but open to the air.
