THE COMPETITION

The competition notice Ed.1991 required the design of a building to be used as a two-family home.

A defined lot was assigned, as well as the distribution and dimensional requirements.

It was requested to respect the urban planning and P.R.G. indices of the place.

The first phase of the competition was organized in two selections (preliminary and definitive).

THE PROJECT

The project consisted in organizing the building avoiding any specular logic of adjacent houses, but defining interpenetrating spaces on multiple levels, where clearly separated entrances and living areas were identified. With the same principle, for the work rooms, separate and indipendent accesses were planned, even if directly connected to the residential wing.

Regarding its relationship with the context, the project did not seek a mimetic morphological approach, but rather incorporated some typological patterns from traditional Emilian architecture. The symmetrical layout of the rooms recalls the characteristics of the region's historic villas, such as the nearby Villa Arnò in Caselline, designed by architect Pio Casoli in Neoclassical style.

The overall layout draws on the open courtyard typology of the Emilian rural house, with a reference to the double-height portico, reinterpreted in an organic manner.

The facades themselves are diversified, in terms of treatment and design references, not only by internal function, but also according to the visual relationships generated by the building's placement on the lot.
