This project is part of a series of houses that we have designed and built in the span of 3 years and that are the result of the exploration of the premises of democratic design - a term that is based on optimizing the resources available to achieve a product. Good design that is affordable to more people. The study of this methodology allowed us to establish guidelines that largely reflect aesthetically in the study of the Farnsworth House (Plano Illinois 1946) by Mies Van der Rohe, of the unadorned spaces made of SKIN AND BONES.
The pure prisms obey the concept of “formal economy” necessary in the implementation of prefabrication. The standardization of the windows and façade based on the harmony with the modulation of the finishes allow us to get closer to the expectations of the clients economically and generate a replicable matrix.
This matrix allowed us to simultaneously develop and build more than one house at a time - CASA GEMELA 2015-2016 -, implementing economy of scale, but adjusting to the specific determinants of the client and the place.
The architecture of this house arose from the dream of a family, who, with a limited budget, wanted a house with enough area to gather and house all of its members. It had to be generous and cheap, two rarely associated qualities.
The house should be a space to enjoy the landscape, allowing direct contact with it, which at the same time was a kind of balcony from which you could contemplate, smell, listen and enjoy nature without altering it.
The footprint of the project had to be adjusted to the dimension of the small clearing on the intact top of a mountain, a point from which the landscape is dominated. Therefore, the house is supported only by 6 points from which the main structure of the construction emerges and the rest is hanging. From the black metal structure - a rectangle formed by two 8x8 m modules, hang triangular turnbuckles that jointly support the ceilings and perimeter overhangs
The central volume excels in height creating a perimeter window. This allows the light and radiation of the morning and afternoon to be captured. The decision of complete transparency posed challenges from a climatic point of view as this is a place where the weather is cold most time of the year, determining the specification of very robust and hermetically sealed windows.
The plan was defined following a formal order, where the services are organized on the rear facade of the house, and the three rooms and the social area are in the front. Above the stunning view of the water.
The access to the house is done through a porch, the door is like a façade module, and it pivots to open onto a balcony from which an uninterrupted view can be seen.
In the absence of decorations, the great luxury is the landscape that is experienced from any point.
