What was the brief?
Nestled by the tranquil shores of Shawnigan Lake near Victoria, B.C., this expansive 5,000 sq ft lakefront escape was designed to capture timeless elegance. With classic design elements thoughtfully incorporated into the millwork and wall paneling, our goal was to create a home that is both comfortable and timeless.

Designed as a getaway retreat for our clients' families and friends, the home features a private beach and space to sleep 14. The heart of the home—the kitchen—serves as the main gathering and focal point, infusing every occasion with conversation and maximizing windows to capture the breathtaking views.

Our clients' aspiration was to encapsulate the sophistication and serenity reminiscent of traditional Hamptons residences, evoking both refinement and approachability. The ambiance radiates warmth and coziness—ideal for relaxation and the creation of enduring summer memories by the lake.

Thoughtfully chosen furnishings blend comfort with practicality, complemented by an eclectic art collection that dances with the spirit of a summer cottage. Our pursuit was to mirror the distinctiveness of our clients' lives while creating a getaway home that is not only cozy but enduringly inviting—a space to be cherished for countless seasons ahead.

What were the key challenges?
The schedule was a bit tricky, and due to all the shipping delays, we were hoping to have been done a bit earlier, with the owners wanting to use the home before the summer so they could enjoy their getaway home in the summer months. Because we were not completed, the owners decided to pause the construction just before completion to allow them to enjoy the house for the summer, and then pick up the remaining few outstanding finishes to be completed after the summer. We totally understood the clients' need to enjoy their lake home for the summer, so we made it work for them. It was a tricky schedule, but overall, we made it work with a bit of a pause in between, so the owners could make the most out of their new home and enjoy the summer with friends and family.

What materials did you choose and why?
We opted for medium ash oak wood flooring and a lighter whitewash oak for the tall millwork cabinets, paired with painted bone-colored kitchen cabinets and white walls throughout. The exception is the games room, where we introduced navy blue, and the kids' bathroom, which features light blue. Our aim was to create contrast and imbue the lake house with a beachy vibe that blends with a Hamptons feel, as requested in the design brief, achieving a sophisticated yet timeless atmosphere. This is enhanced by traditional white walls with applied moulding and softer neutral bone-colored millwork in the kitchen and primary bathrooms, incorporating a mix of traditional and modern details. The clients desired a light, warm vibe with traditional and rustic elements to complement the existing river rock fireplace. We integrated rustic touches through the flooring, tall kitchen millwork, and a wood countertop on the kitchen island, alongside marble and lighter monochromatic countertops. Additionally, we whitewashed the river rock fireplace to mitigate the strong grays, further enhancing the home's overall soft and inviting look.
