The Utah Residence is located on a long and steep
four-acre site just on the edge of Salt Lake City backing
up onto the Wasatch National Forest. Like a boulder
wedged into the mountainside the 7,500 square foot
home anchors itself through a series of retaining walls
in the landscape act as swales diverting snow runoff
around the house. Multiple decks are configured on
all sides of the three-story home discreetly hidden
behind a second skin of hardwood horizontal louvers.
This double skin strategy provides a smooth, crisp
and faceted profile to the house as it leans back into
the hillside. Views to the Northwest encompass the
City while views to the South capture Mt. Olympus
and environs. The experience inside the house is one
of constant connectivity maintained by views through
rooms and across programs. A split-level strategy
was employed to allow for a strong sense of openness
between major entertaining spaces while discreet
zones of activity are delineated through the design of
extensive millwork and built-in cabinetry.
