Once completed, the Sommerhalde terrace development in Uerkheim, will comprise 43 apartments. In a first stage, twelve units were built between 2019 and 2021. The centerpiece of the development is the central, car-free play street with an underground parking garage below. Said street is a meeting place and distribution organ for pedestrian access from Baumattstrasse. The rows of houses, which connect to the play street either at the bottom or at the top, are oriented in such a way that the stairs in between do not lead in a line to the uppermost apartment in each case but jump halfway up.
This interplay is not only reflected in the exterior design, but also in the houses themselves, where two smooth facades with the entrances and two saw-toothed facades with the bedrooms face each other in pairs. The bay-like room windows on the one hand allow a view into the distance and on the other hand reduce the direct view into the neighboring house. If from the outside one gets the impression that there is a single room behind such a corner window, the view from the inside shows that the room dividers are placed on the inner corner of the window, so that the rooms each have two facade openings.
At the center of the apartments is the kitchen, which is a free-standing piece of furniture that separates the entrance area with its vestibule and weather-protected forecourt from the room side. This central space expands towards the south to form a multi-zoned spatial figure. The terraces, almost half of which are planted, create more room height in the living area on the floors below, while the loggia defines a dining room.
