South Watch Flow uses its organic, flowing roof, rough and textured corten steel panels, rhythmic board formed concrete, and beautiful natural light-filled interior to create an experiential living environment for the client.

Named ‘South Watch Flow’ for its organic and flowing roof, this project focuses on creating a stunning, modern home while also thinking about how different spaces and rooms interact with each other as well as the exterior site.

Nestled in a quiet neighborhood of Arvada, Colorado, the L-shaped plan creates a hidden, private yard for the family to relax and enjoy life. Although the home follows a unique curved footprint, the interior spaces are laid out in a simple and functional program allowing the client’s everyday life to flow and balance with itself.

Parts of the façade were cut and pushed to create fins that allow light into the circulation and utility areas of the home. This fin articulation brings the façade to life as you progress through the site, changing your perception of solid and void and how you interact with the building openings.

The flowing roof was crafted to softly drape the building envelope with an organic canopy. This connection to the organic was further reinforced with a custom eave that creates a delicate, leaf-like taper at every edge of the roof. This flowing roof will be a testament to the design intent of F9 as well as the structural engineering and construction prowess of our partners on the project. Complex modeling was employed to ensure that the roof construction would be as cheap and simple as possible, which we did by implementing a shape that allows for minimal variation in structural member length and shape.

Materiality was important to this project and was an important point of study and thought. Corten steel was selected for the exterior, which over time will weather even more and create its own unique patina. Board formed concrete is used on the few heavy walls in the project staying on theme with more materiality and variation in texture. Beautiful hardwood floors will cover the interior living spaces and will soften up the feeling within the modern home.
