The existing terrace home that is St Kilda Loft is reimagined through an enduring lens, peppered with masculine touches and a timeless approach throughout. mlk design studio draws from the generous scale and openness typical of lofted forms, and proposes an appropriate response to the context of the site, its volume and the personal expression of the owners.

In retaining the height of the home and its established links to both the streetscape and the dense tree canopy above, the interior works focus on capturing acontemporary spirit that supports both living with and within the natural elements.

Looking to iconic loft living, like in Manhattan, the main approach utilises the existing form’s warmth and familiarity to combine with more masculine touches and nuanced detailing throughout. The resulting terrace house combines tan-coloured leather and timber varieties within as well as large and uninterrupted glazing throughout that connect the interior and exterior spaces. Due to the lack of outdoor space, other elements are highlighted as a counter. An intentional strength in the high-quality finishes used throughout sees the use of natural stone, metal and timber, ensuring the home’s longevity in every gesture.
