The staircase gallery in the chapel of the Bonnefanten monastery in Maastricht, designed by Maurer United Architects, is multifunctional in use. At the same time this intervention organises the total program.

The chapel of the Bonnefanten monastery in the Ezelmarkt in Maastricht has a new function and with it a new corresponding interior. The monument is renovated by Satijnplus Architecten. Maurer United Architecten (MUA) made the interior design for the main space, which also functions as the main entrance. All relevant information of all university campus units is available on this location. Besides an information desk, the program also includes a gift shop and a Coffeelovers Café.

The design consists of a multifunctional staircase gallery. First of all it provides a connection between the ground floor and the one story higher levelled cloister. Thereby the staircase is also a lecture hall which makes the space accessible for lecturing and other performances. Leading control panels are assembled at the end of the steps by which campus information can be gathered. Lastly the staircase functions as a space dividing instrument. Thereby the space underneath can be used as a café. Because of the simple but precise detailing, the staircase gallery presents itself as an autonomous object which dominates the space in a balanced way. Thus MUA has succeeded in organizing the total program by one clear intervention.
