The Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities forms part of the University of Oxford’s long-term redevelopment of the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, a ten-acre former hospital site to the north of Oxford’s city centre. Since 2009, the site has been part of an extensive masterplan that consolidates academic activity, introduces shared research and social spaces, and establishes new public routes and amenities. Designed by British architecture practice Hopkins Architects, the Schwarzman Centre establishes a new academic and cultural presence within the evolving Radcliffe Observatory Quarter. Opening to staff and students in September 2025, the building is certified as England’s largest Passivhaus scheme.
Positioned opposite the Grade I-listed Radcliffe Observatory at Green Templeton College, the building brings together seven Humanities faculties previously dispersed across twenty-six buildings, alongside the Bodleian Humanities Library, the Oxford Internet Institute, and the Institute for Ethics in AI. Physical proximity supports collaboration across disciplines while also accommodating a substantial public programme.
Brief development and academic consolidation
The brief was shaped through extensive consultation with academics, librarians, students, and staff. The aim was not only to unify teaching and research functions but also to integrate them with public-facing cultural and performance spaces. As a result, the Schwarzman Centre is the first University of Oxford building to purposefully combine academic facilities with publicly accessible performance and exhibition spaces and the first to be fully open to the public at ground level.
The 25,300-square-metre building accommodates seven faculties: English, History, Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics, Medieval and Modern Languages, Music, Philosophy, and Theology and Religion. Teaching and seminar spaces range from small discussion rooms to large lecture theatres and are distributed both for shared use and within individual faculties.
Spatial organisation and public access
The building is organised around the Great Hall, a central four-storey atrium with faculty entrances at its cardinal points and study carrels above. The Hall is topped by a domed skylight: framed in timber and steel, it spans nineteen metres in diameter and rises seven metres above the roofline, bringing daylight into the building.
The entire ground floor is publicly accessible and arranged as a continuous internal route running north to south. From the entrance arcades at either end, visitors move through a sequence of interconnected spaces including a double-height welcome lobby, cultural and exhibition areas, and the Great Hall itself. This internal route functions as a public street through the building, avoiding conventional barriers to entry and allowing the building to be read as part of the city’s public realm.
The Great Hall is designed to accommodate a range of uses, including exhibitions, lectures, performances, and formal events. Its scale and civic character draw on Oxford’s tradition of large shared interior spaces and recall English architect Nicholas Hawksmoor’s unrealised vision of a “Forum Universitatis” — a shared civic interior proposed as a central gathering space for the University that was never realised in built form.
Architecture, materials, and context
Architecturally, the building’s scale is broken down into a composition of smaller volumes faced in Clipsham limestone and handmade buff brick from York. This approach modulates the massing in response to the historic context of the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter while clearly defining entrances and public thresholds. Colonnades, landscaped areas, and bosques of trees form a series of external rooms, softening the boundary between building and city.
Internally, the architectural language combines prefabricated construction with durable materials and carefully detailed finishes. Modern methods of construction are balanced with a material palette that references historic collegiate architecture without direct imitation.
Public programme and performance spaces
At the centre of the project is the Humanities Cultural Programme, which brings together academic activity and public performance. The building includes a 500-seat concert hall, a 250-seat theatre, a 100-seat black box performance laboratory, and a recital hall, alongside rehearsal facilities and music studios. Additional public spaces include a cinema, exhibition gallery, a museum housing the Bate Collection of historic musical instruments, a centre for schools and public engagement, a cafe, and a bar.
The performance spaces are arranged across two basement levels as box-in-box structures, grouped around a double-height foyer that also functions as an informal venue. The concert hall accommodates orchestras of up to sixty musicians, while the theatre is designed primarily for spoken-word performance. The black box laboratory supports experimental and amplified work and the recital hall is intended for non-amplified music.
Environmental performance and Passivhaus design
Environmental performance informed the project from the outset and was embedded alongside spatial, acoustic, and programme requirements. The Schwarzman Centre is certified as England’s largest Passivhaus scheme and the world’s first Passivhaus concert hall, applying demanding environmental standards to a building that combines teaching, research, performance, and public access.
The Passivhaus approach shaped decisions across the building’s form, envelope, and services strategy, supporting low operational energy demand while maintaining stable internal conditions suited to both academic and performance spaces. The building meets the UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard limit for space heating demand and operational carbon emissions. Moreover, it contributes to the University of Oxford’s wider targets for net zero carbon emissions and net biodiversity gain by 2035.
Alongside its operational performance, the project incorporates measures intended to limit embodied carbon through material choice, prefabrication, and construction strategy. Environmental performance was integrated into the architectural and construction approach rather than treated as a discrete technical layer, supporting durability, operational efficiency, and long-term adaptability.
Landscape
The landscape strategy introduces a sequence of public green spaces around the perimeter of the building, structured by newly planted trees, seating areas, cycle parking, and pedestrian routes. South-facing cafe doors open onto a public garden at ground level, while a landscaped terrace for academics and students is located on the third floor. The landscape design responds both to the architectural arrangement of the building and to the wider context of the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter.
