Sunset Groves West, a residential and mixed-use complex by A&M Architects, unfolds as a sequence of seven buildings arranged to establish continuity between architecture, landscape and the nearby coastline at The Ellinikon in Athens.
Located at the northwestern edge of the masterplan, adjacent to The Ellinikon Park and close to the beach, the development is conceived as a low-rise, five-storey ensemble that prioritises views, permeability and access to shared outdoor spaces. The scheme brings together housing, retail and hospitality uses, aiming to support everyday life while reinforcing the emerging urban character of the area.
The buildings are positioned parallel to one another or subtly rotated in relation to the site perimeter, forming a ribbon-like configuration across the plot. This arrangement enables cross-ventilated apartments with extended sightlines towards the sea, while also shaping a central communal landscape. At the heart of the complex, curved pathways, planted surfaces, a water feature and dedicated relaxation areas create a shared open-air environment that visually connects with the neighbouring park.
In total, Sunset Groves West accommodates 112 apartments alongside three food and beverage units, five retail stores and a bank branch. An underground parking level provides 208 parking spaces, including accessible bays and electric vehicle infrastructure, complemented by 25 outdoor spaces serving the commercial uses. Of the six five-storey buildings, four are dedicated exclusively to residential use, while two integrate housing with retail, dining or banking functions.
Horizontal architectural bands wrap around the façades, expressed as flexible white ribbons that occasionally curve or expand to form pergolas and shaded intermediate spaces. These elements emphasise the project’s fluid geometry while visually linking the individual volumes. Linear planters are integrated along the elevations, extending the landscape vertically and reinforcing the connection between the built form and the surrounding greenery.
Materially, the façades combine earthy tones with vertical elements in wood-like finishes, which follow the curvature of the architecture and provide privacy between adjacent apartments. In the commercial buildings, these vertical fins become the dominant façade feature, clearly distinguishing the mixed-use areas while maintaining overall compositional coherence across the complex.
