Da Lat’s mild climate, sloping terrain, and pitched-roof houses nestled within the highland landscape define the city’s distinctive character. Against this backdrop, the challenge for Swan Hotel was to create a contemporary building that remains in harmony with the surrounding landscape and preserves the architectural character of the region.
Situated on a hillside in Da Lat, Swan Hotel connects two adjacent plots measuring 331 m² and 300 m², with an elevation difference of up to 12 meters and two separate road access points. The significant change in elevation, together with planning regulations, required the project to be organized into two distinct building volumes while maintaining functional connections for a multi-service hotel.
For a hospitality project on sloping terrain, we chose to break the building down into layers of appropriately scaled volumes that follow the natural contours of the site. The primary inspiration came from the composition of houses stacked upon one another. We envisioned the hotel as more than a temporary place to stay; it should feel like a home guests can return to. By arranging abstracted house forms in layers, the design avoids the imposing scale often associated with conventional hotels. Familiar pitched roofs and carefully considered spatial proportions allow Swan Hotel to balance contemporary hospitality comforts with respect for its local context.
With two access points at different elevations, the circulation system is organized through prefabricated structures positioned along the side least likely to obstruct views from the guest rooms. The upper road serves as the main arrival point for walk-in and visiting guests, while the lower road provides access to the hotel’s service areas.
Emerging through the highland mist, the layered volumes and pitched roofs create an undulating silhouette reminiscent of the surrounding hills. This approach allows Swan Hotel to sit quietly within its setting rather than dominate it. The building expresses its identity through a contemporary architectural language while preserving the familiarity and authenticity of local architecture.
Swan Hotel demonstrates how a hotel of considerable scale can embody the philosophy of Kiệm Architecture through the thoughtful organization of massing and circulation. Its value lies in preserving the rhythm of the terrain, responding to the local climate, and carrying forward Da Lat’s architectural identity through a restrained contemporary language. Every design decision seeks to keep nature as the dominant presence, allowing architecture to serve as a supporting layer that enriches the human experience.
