For this addition & alteration project, a new frontage was added to the original house to achieve two objectives: create direct access to the house from a level below the main entrance and introduce a weather protection screen for the west-facing facade.
For the first objective, the existing the sloping driveway was replaced with a flat forecourt which is level with the road outside. A grand flight of steps brings visiting guests up to the main door of the house. The newly created basement floor houses the garage and a new entrance foyer that is linked to the existing house by a lift, providing the occupants with direct access to the bedroom floor. A new gym and hobby room are located in a pavilion-like structure, perched above the garage.
For the second, fixed louvres as well as movable screens were added to give the interior spaces much-needed protection from the low-angle afternoon sun. The gold-tinted, fluorocarbon coated aluminium screens are highly versatile, as they can be fixed, sliding or pivoting, according to the functional requirement.
The newly completed west-facing façade is in effect, a climate regulator, providing the house with all the necessary, previously absent elements of a tropical house.
However, aside from being merely functional, the louvred screens give the house its new identity, radically tranforming the existing house with minimal demolition of the old, existing structures.
