Ten50

Handel Architects as Architects

Ten50's interiors draw from and celebrate a fusion of Downtown Los Angeles's golden past, and the fashionable and youthful present.

The golden era of Downtown Los Angeles can still be spied through doorways; glimpses into once-grand lobbies of stone and intricately formed metals from the 30s and 40s. That historical echo is the underlying mood of the Ten 50 experience. Meshed with this golden-era sophistication is the rebirth of DTLA: the younger, forward-thinking, urbane professionals yearning for a cosmopolitan urban experience.

The Ten50 experience begins with the lobby and the first glimmer of inspiration came from a Raymond Chandler description of the (fictional) Treloar Building on Sixth and Olive, wherein he sums up an interior in a single phrase: “a vast black and gold lobby.”  The floor is of white and black limestone in a trompe l’oiel motif, while the concierge desk is wrapped in hand-rubbed brass and capped with St. Laurent marble. The walls are wrapped in dark wood and antiqued mirror.

Renowned LA artist, Chris Trueman, created a bespoke installation for the lobby; the 14-foot high painting is the center-piece of the entry experience. Furniture was custom made in Los Angeles, and is mid-century in theme. Lighting is by Roll and Hill.
