A renovation of a beach front shack to maximise beach views and privacy

What was the brief?

The clients had an existing beach front shack that was dark, cold and not private. This was to become their primary residence.

They wanted to modernise the facade, open up the interior to allow more sunlight filled spaces and have a visual connection to the beach without being a goldfish bowl.

What were the key challenges?

There are always challenges with renovations. In hindsight, we should have demolished the existing shack and built a new home. Only one existing wall remained after everything was altered and removed.

The view: It was a requirement that the main bedroom had views of the beachfront but not easily viewed from the street.

Hide the Roof: Change the whole style of the existing shack

The front deck: The existing deck was a timber floor over a garage and leaked.

What were the solutions?

The view: The front deck was roofed and the balustrade was solid and angled to provide a higher closed in view from the bedroom but an open view from the kitchen/ dining room.

Hide the Roof: A parapet was wrapped around the whole roof to change the shape and style of the house.

The front deck was re-done to provide new structure and waterproofing along with a trench drain to discharge water.
