The Cline is a 243-unit market-rate apartment building that blends modern living with rapidly developing context. The project is located on Stone Way, a bustling street in Seattle’s Fremont Neighborhood, and offers a fresh take on urban residential architecture while promoting community interaction and street life. The design takes cues from the surrounding neighborhood while integrating innovative solutions that cater to the evolving dynamics of work and living.
At the heart of the Cline is a design that pays homage to the history of its surroundings. The building’s detailed facades and thoughtfully carved mass reflect the architectural language of the adjacent Shannon & Wilson building and the former Stone Way Electric. These nods to the neighborhood history are combined with modern elements, resulting in a structure that feels both familiar and contemporary.
The design reimagines how a residential neighborhood can support the evolving way in which we work and live, using this energy to bring activity and life to the street. This approach is shown through a dynamic, street-level co-working space at the corner of 38th and Stone Way – a lively focal point where work and come together.
The Cline stands apart in its effort to make space for the public realm. The setbacks and deep overhangs at the sidewalk offer additional space for pedestrians and cover for waiting bus riders. The courtyard is lushly planted, providing a welcoming massing relief and calm space of respite from the bustle of Stone Way, while linking the building’s entry to its amenities.
