In the established urban fabric of Greater Kailash, Delhi, a builder floor does not announce itself. It arrives as a given, fixed in dimension, constrained in ceiling, yet open to everything a considered design can offer. The Elysian House takes shape through this approach, reworking its original form into a home that feels intentional, warm, and gently uplifting. Across 1,800 square feet, every decision, from the palette to the plan, from the material to the light, is guided by a single conviction that architecture exists to serve the people who live within it.

Conceived with a north-referenced planning approach, The Elysian House emerges from a careful reading of light, direction, and climate. In Delhi’s composite climate, where the northern light remains soft and consistent, the western sun is harsh and low, and the southern exposure is thermally intense, the renovation begins by reorienting the experience of the existing builder floor rather than altering its structure. Openings, functions, and movement are recalibrated to align with solar paths, prevailing north-west to south-east air movement, and seasonal variations, allowing the house to perform better both spatially and environmentally.

CONCEPT & DESIGN APPROACH

The Elysian House is envisioned as a home that feels lively and joyful, yet calm and meditative at its core. The design navigates a careful balance between softness and clarity, creating interiors that uplift everyday living without overwhelming the senses. This is not a home that asserts itself through gesture or spectacle. Instead, it earns its presence through restraint, through the way north light diffuses across textured surfaces, through the rhythm of circular forms set against a neutral ground, and through the quiet harmony between a dining table and a place of worship. The design philosophy places people firmly above form. A renovation is not a new building; it carries the memory of what existed, the logic of what was found, and the opportunity of what can be transformed. Here, that opportunity is approached with a deliberate strategy, efficient space utilisation, maximum natural light, careful material choices, and a palette that enhances spatial perception without imposing its weight. The result is a home that feels generous, even within its measured footprint.

SPATIAL PLANNING

The plan is organised around a clear hierarchy of spaces: public, semi-private, and private, that transition gracefully from one to the next. The entry flows into the living area, which in turn connects to the dining and worship zone, keeping shared life anchored at the heart of the home. The kitchen sits adjacent, integrated yet self-contained. The bedrooms and children’s room are positioned to the rear, offering quietude and a degree of separation from the activity of the shared zones.

Efficient space utilisation is embedded in every room. Storage is concealed rather than displayed, maintaining visual calm. Zones are defined not by walls but by material shifts, ceiling treatment, and light. The layout prioritises circulation that feels effortless, enabling seamless movement through the home, while each space offers both functional clarity and a sense of comfort.

MATERIAL & PALETTE

The material language of The Elysian House is grounded in warmth. A palette of beige and browns anchors the home in a calm, soothing atmosphere, flowing consistently across textures and finishes to create continuity without monotony. Layering is central to the approach. Smooth surfaces sit alongside tactile ones, matte finishes complement warmer sheens, and natural materials are introduced to add depth and life to the interiors.

Fluted glass appears across the dining and worship zone, introducing translucency and a gentle diffusion of light, allowing this threshold between function and pause to feel almost luminous. Wood is used purposefully, as circular plates on the feature wall, as cabinetry detailing, and as a grounding warmth throughout. The palette never shouts. It speaks in a register that is consistent, considered, and deeply hospitable.

KEY FEATURES

The living area is designed as a minimal yet ornamental space, anchored by a feature wall composed of wooden circular plates that function as tactile art elements, adding depth, rhythm, and quiet visual interest to what might otherwise be a plain surface. These circular forms carry the room without dominating it, offering a softness of expression that resonates throughout the space. Large windows opening onto the balcony draw natural light generously into the interior, enhancing openness and strengthening the indoor-outdoor connection. The room balances simplicity with expression, resulting in a living environment that feels simultaneously lively, soothing, and connected to the world beyond the glass.

The dining space is seamlessly integrated with the worship area, a pairing that speaks to the continuity between daily life and moments of pause, between nourishment and gratitude. Fluted glass cabinetry runs across this zone, introducing layered depth and a diffused quality of light while providing functional, visually light storage. This dual-purpose space is one of the home's most considered moves, practical and poetic in equal measure.

The kitchen follows a modern design language, with clean lines, an efficient layout, and concealed storage that ensures the room remains calm and purposeful without disturbing the visual coherence of the wider home. It is designed to be used with ease and maintained with minimal effort, a space in which the act of cooking is supported, not complicated.

PRIVATE SPACES

The private spaces of The Elysian House are designed with distinct yet cohesive identities, each responding to the specific needs and emotional character of its occupant. The first bedroom adopts a soft floral theme expressed in muted pinks and greys, with carefully chosen wallpaper adding warmth and a sense of quiet comfort. The palette is gentle, never saccharine, maintaining the subtlety that defines the rest of the home. The attached washroom carries the same refined material sensibility, with clean detailing and a considered palette.

The second bedroom takes a more minimalist, functional approach, with an integrated workstation that supports the demands of contemporary living. The room is calm and resolved, a space in which rest and productivity share the same air without conflict. Its attached washroom mirrors the first in its precision, offering the same standard of refined detailing within a slightly different mood.

The children’s room is designed as a flexible and playful space, thoughtfully adaptable for the years ahead. A foldable, wall-mounted Murphy bed opens up the floor area during the day, allowing for generous play space without compromising on space efficiency. Integrated storage keeps the interiors clutter-free, and the overall design allows the room to adapt gracefully as the child grows, reinforcing the home's calm, joyful, and thoughtfully layered design language in a space that belongs entirely to its youngest occupant.

CONCLUSION

The Elysian House demonstrates what is possible when a renovation is approached with genuine care, not merely as a reconfiguration of rooms, but as the creation of a home. It asks how 1,800 square feet can feel open, generous, and deeply personal.
