Carr as Architecture and interior design

The International by Carr honours the rituals of daily life

The International is a new multi-residential development designed by Carr, developed by Landream, in the bayside suburb of Brighton in Melbourne, Australia. The project stands out for its distinct connection to the outdoors and ample natural light that has been specially crafted within each apartment.

The building’s architecture sets the tone with a highly precise and refined form, positioned out towards to the views of the bay. These large portal windows puncture the exterior to instil that indoor, outdoor connection. Timeless yet modern, The International stands strong with its articulated repetition.

Greenery, gardens and planting are abundant, with the site’s landscape playing a key role in the design. Designed in collaboration with landscape architecture studio Tract, the organic plant life softens the textured, robust form of the building.

Boundaries are deliberately blurred, resulting in interiors that provide solace and respite for the inhabitants. The inside-out feeling is furthered by generous spatial planning and considered detailing. Each layout considers access to views and natural light to further enhance the interiors. Carr put significant thought into the rituals of daily life and how even the most minute details could be accommodated for comfort, such as kitchen layout, zoning and storage.

Natural, refined, effortless and elegant, the materiality of each apartment features premium finishes, natural stone, custom joinery, Gaggenau appliances, gas fireplaces and high-end lighting. These are homes to take shelter in.
