The psychiatric care unit, Psykiatrins Hus, forms the beginning of Uppsala University Hospital in Sweden and is located adjacent to the green, recreational spaces of the palace gardens and close to the centre of Uppsala.
The building integrates the entire hospital area into one efficient and modern facility with a strong identity – which will provide the University Hospital with a stronger connection to the town centre in the future. The architectural design of Psykiatrins Hus is based on the unique scenery of the adjacent park. The large green and hilly spaces of the park are extended into the building to achieve a natural, recreational space and intimate, safe environment for the users all year round. Everywhere, the green spaces are designed to encourage relaxation or activity – with the overall objective of creating a clear and attractive connection between the interior and exterior. With its variety of spaces and stimuli, Psykiatrins Hus ensures a good treatment environment for patients and a healthy and safe work environment for employees, researchers and students. In addition, the layout of the building promotes close contact and dialogue between patients and staff.
