The brief was to add a contemporary extension encompassing living and kitchen areas with sufficient storage whilst retaining the period façade and front bedrooms. The client wanted a considered response to open plan living that was functional and thermally efficient yet offered a playfulness and warmth. The client wanted to maximise the site usage to retain the backyard space.
Materials were chosen which were thematically connected yet functional such as the high thermal mass concrete floor. The vertical spotted gum external façade mimics and subverts the existing horizontal weatherboards yet its angled design supports thermal efficiency. Original chimney bricks were reused as boundary walls which creates a link with the original brick boundary wall. The living space utilised the maximum boundary allowance to minimise the northern footprint. The clean, long lines of the kitchen and dining joinery creates a pleasing effect whilst providing significant storage. Overall it is balanced and functional yet warm, beautiful and inviting space.
