TIETO HQ Data is Beautiful

TIETO HQ - Data is Beautiful

Lighting Design Collective as Lighting Designers

Data is Beautiful - Lighting as live data visualisation.

This lighting intervention converts data from thousands of IoT sensors into an immersive lighting experience.

Tieto Oyj is an Finnish IT software and service company and one of the largest IT service providers in Europe. The goal of the project was to find a way to immerse the visitors and the employees into TIETO's primary product: Data. The lighting was to express TIETO's future orientated narrative of capturing the opportunities of the data-driven world and turning them into lifelong value for people, business and society. The lighting concept sought to provide high quality environments with unique light features as the focal points and narrative elements. The intervention created experimental cyber-physical spaces where the key areas such as the entrance atrium and the conference centre were merging the digital realm and the built environment. The project is seen as an real-life prototype for the emerging trend of cyber-physical spaces.

The atrium space was inhabited by 26 meter tall three-dimensional light sculpture made of semi-transparent printed electronics LED strips. Over 40000 RGBW pixels display the live data in 3D mapped formation where the beautiful light patterns appear to glide in and out of the sculpture.

The reception desk and the backwalls were fitted with similar printed electronics LED sheets again with pixel control allowing for diffused connection to the digital realm reminescent of a "shōji (障子)“ Japanese rise paper wall type diffused connection. The conference centre corridors were fitted with special LoT downlights with digitally variable beams of light and colour washes layering beautiful light patterns and subtle movements derived from the TIETO's live data feeds.

Finally an 55 inch transparent OLED touchscreen was positioned at the waiting area inviting visitors to interact with the immersive lighting. On this giant user interface the live data visualisation constantly regenerates and responds to the user. The resulting new patterns then softly ripples into the light sculpture, the walls and the corridors. Among the abstract data tangible information about the environmental conditions and TIETO's data offerings are provided.
