In the heart of Abu Dhabi’s Reem Mall, Titter Totter reimagines what an early learning environment can be. Conceived as a 350-square-metre sanctuary for children and families, the brief demanded more than a simple playroom. The client sought a space that would inspire creativity and independence in children, while offering an atmosphere of refinement and reassurance to parents. It had to be durable, hygienic and safe, yet also emotionally intelligent, encouraging play, discovery and rest in equal measure. The space was asked to embrace Montessori-inspired principles, integrate tactile and developmental tools, and provide areas for both activity and contemplation. For adults, it needed to offer comfort and visibility, as well as corners for light work or pause. The challenge lay in creating a place where design sophistication and pedagogical function could co-exist seamlessly.
Concept
Sneha Divias Atelier approached the commission with a philosophy that architecture can profoundly shape the earliest experiences of childhood. Titter Totter is not designed as a themed playground or overstimulating environment but as a miniature world scaled to children’s bodies and minds. The interiors merge natural materials, soft geometries and intuitive zoning to foster exploration without chaos. Curves dominate— arches, rounded walls and carved-out niches cultivate a sense of safety and approachability. By focusing on proportion, light and texture rather than spectacle, the concept redefines the language of children’s spaces. It becomes a kind of architectural pedagogy, where children absorb spatial fluency and aesthetic literacy from their surroundings, even before they can articulate it.
Various design elements
The visual identity of Titter Totter is anchored by light oak, which wraps joinery, floors and structural details with a smooth, tactile finish. Terracotta and moss-green accents add subtle warmth and variation, while still aligning with the natural palette. Rounded cut-outs in walls, glazed apertures and alcoves punctuate the interior, each offering opportunities for play and discovery. Central to the design is the balance of active and quiet zones: climbing frames and padded floors sit alongside reading pods and art corners, creating a rhythm that mirrors children’s natural energy cycles. The space is open enough for easy circulation yet articulated with smaller niches, allowing children to choose between sociable play and private exploration.
About the execution
The execution of the project demanded the precision normally reserved for boutique hospitality interiors. Curved joinery, pre-fabricated millwork and custom-built play structures were prototyped and tested for both safety and finish before installation. This ensured every surface aligned seamlessly, every joint was concealed, and every edge was rounded to child-friendly radii. The fast-track timeline, aligned with Reem Mall’s opening schedule, required strategic off-site fabrication and strict on-site coordination. Sneha Divias Atelier supervised every detail—from the consistency of veneer grain to the integration of impact-absorbing flooring—so that the final space reflects the design vision in its entirety.
About the ambience
Ambience is central to the project’s success. Where most children’s venues rely on frenetic colour and sound, Titter Totter cultivates a calm but inspiring environment. Acoustic treatments absorb excess noise, creating a soft murmur even when the space is full. Lighting is layered, with cove lights and pendant fixtures casting a warm glow that can be tuned to different moods. Parents remark on the unexpected serenity: children remain engaged for long stretches, while adults find the atmosphere relaxing rather than exhausting. It is both whimsical and dignified, a space where a sense of order underpins delight.
Challenges overcome
The project’s most complex challenge was reconciling stimulation with composure. Designing for children often defaults to excess—bright colours, loud graphics, too many stimuli—but here the goal was to nurture imagination without overwhelming it. Padded foam blocks transform into a landscape, and a subtle mural sparks storytelling without distraction. The second challenge was spatial efficiency. At 350 square metres, the footprint needed to support diverse activities—free play, workshops, birthdays, and quiet retreats—while maintaining circulation and safety. Multi-functional design elements, such as seating that doubles as storage or movable partitions that reconfigure zones, allowed flexibility without compromise. A third challenge was the technical integration of safety, climate control and hygiene within a refined aesthetic. Meeting international playground safety codes, air quality standards and daily maintenance requirements—all while maintaining the visual serenity of a boutique interior—required rigorous detailing and careful material specification.
Unique / key features
What sets Titter Totter apart is its insistence on architectural dignity for children. Tree-like structural columns double as playful features, arched openings frame small discoveries, and every piece of furniture is scaled intentionally to the child user. Oversized blocks, a marble-run wall and climbing structures invite cooperative play, while intimate pods encourage solitary reading. Parents, too, are considered: comfortable lounge seating and clear sightlines ensure they feel as welcome as their children. The space does not pander or dilute—it treats children as discerning users, capable of appreciating beauty and subtlety.
Technical elements
The technical backbone of Titter Totter is as carefully orchestrated as its aesthetic. Floors integrate an impact-absorbing underlayment topped with non-slip, medicalgrade vinyl for hygiene and durability. Fire-rated upholstery and antimicrobial fabrics withstand heavy use while remaining tactile. Climate control is calibrated to maintain even temperature and clean air, essential in Abu Dhabi’s environment. Acoustics are finely tuned, with cloud-like ceiling panels and upholstered wall sections reducing reverberation. Lighting is programmable, shifting seamlessly from bright activity to calm storytelling sessions. Security and safety are discretely embedded—child-proof locks, rounded corners, concealed fixings—ensuring peace of mind without visual compromise.
Material selection
A palette of natural and durable materials defines the interior. Light oak veneer provides warmth and visual continuity. Leather and faux leather are employed on cushions and lounge pieces for durability and ease of maintenance, while soft acoustic fabrics upholster wall panels and cushions, inviting touch and contributing to sound control. These materials were chosen not just for performance but for the message.
Furniture chosen
Bespoke child-sized tables, chairs and foam blocks are designed with rounded edges, stable bases and soft finishes. Reading nooks are furnished with upholstered benches and cushions, offering comfort at the scale of a child’s body. For adults, leather lounge chairs and built-in benches provide comfort without breaking visual harmony. The furniture is modular, allowing reconfiguration for workshops, playdates or celebrations, ensuring the space adapts to the rhythms of daily use.
