A contemporary courtyard house nestled among the vineyards of Valpolicella

ABCPLUS signs a residential project that reinterprets the tradition of Italian living with
a contemporary vision.

Nestled in the rolling hills of Valpolicella, renowned for its wines and historic villas, stands a newly completed courtyard house designed by ABCPLUS studio, a project that thoughtfully reimagines the relationship between architecture, nature, and domestic intimacy.

The residence is centered around a defining void: a south-facing internal courtyard that
acts as the vibrant heart of the home. This sheltered, intimate space not only bridges the indoors and outdoors but also creates visual and functional connections between the different areas of the house. It embodies a vision of living that harmoniously blends the roots of Italian architectural tradition with contemporary lifestyle needs.

As Giò Ponti wrote in 1928, “The Italian home is a place to savor life and the
beauty of our sky and land. This project honors that legacy, interpreting it with
simplicity, rigor, and openness” explains the design team.

Conceived as a compact yet dynamic organism, the house turns inward, opening selectively through carefully composed views: expansive glass walls overlooking the courtyard and singular windows framing the surrounding landscape. The interplay between sheltered and open spaces comes alive in warmer months, when fully retractable glazing transforms the courtyard into an active, walkable threshold—an extension of the living space.

Set within a treasured agricultural and landscape context, the house quietly engages with the historic village fabric. The exterior volumes strike a delicate balance between tradition and modernity: a main double-height block with a pitched roof, accompanied by two smaller volumes inspired by Venetian barchesse, defined by generous openings and an elegant, minimalist language.

With this work, ABCPLUS continues its pursuit of a quiet, rooted architecture—one that
fosters intimacy without forsaking the landscape—offering a respectful and intelligent
reinterpretation of the Italian tradition of living.
