Erskineville Residence is a refined architectural intervention redefining modern urban living within Sydney’s vibrant Inner West. Finished in 2025, this meticulously crafted terrace renovation balances heritage respect with contemporary living needs, delivering a joyful fusion of light, space, and material finesse.

Situated in the heart of Erskineville, the project responds to the evolving lifestyle demands of a young inner-city couple seeking enhanced spatial comfort, improved connection to outdoor areas, and a clear architectural identity. The residence achieves this through a carefully orchestrated addition and transformation of the existing terrace dwelling, blending seamlessly with its heritage context while introducing fresh, modern spatial qualities. 

The narrow, south-facing site presented two key challenges: increasing living space without compromising solar access, and maintaining privacy within a dense urban fabric. David Parsons Architect collaborated closely with planning consultant to secure approval for a sensitive upper-storey addition that accommodates two new bedrooms and a family bathroom, thoughtfully expanding the home’s footprint. 

At the heart of the design is a light-filled circulation spine, incorporating a strategically placed skylight above the central staircase. This element not only introduces natural light deep into the plan but also anchors the spatial experience, punctuating the transition between old and new.

The ground level reveals a reconfigured open-plan layout. Here, kitchen and dining spaces gently step down to a sunken lounge that opens directly to a new outdoor patio. This design encourages fluid indoor-outdoor living — a key lifestyle priority for contemporary Sydney households.

Addressing the site’s limited solar access and privacy concerns, a bespoke brick screen at the rear serves multiple functions. It screens neighbouring views, softens the building’s rear elevation, and subtly reflects northern light back into the living spaces. This thoughtful architectural gesture not only enhances comfort but also creates visually engaging interior atmospheres throughout the day.

The material palette is deliberately light and fresh — chosen to harmonise with Erskineville’s historic streetscape while optimising thermal performance. These materials help to reflect light into internal spaces and reduce heat gain during summer months, demonstrating a holistic approach to passive design. 

The project also includes a series of bespoke joinery elements — from tailored storage and stone features to customised stair balustrades and integrated lighting — that elevate both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The builder, Frontier Projects, expertly executed these intricate details, ensuring design fidelity from concept to completion. 

The Erskineville Residence underscores David Parsons Architect’s commitment to creating thoughtful, context-responsive residential architecture that enhances everyday living.
