The WH-Arena project is a visionary and sustainable solution to meet global challenges in architecture. The project won the competition final round with its innovative approach to creating a versatile, energy-efficient, and flexible space. Architect and Engineer Sterling Presser, along with Structural and Facade Engineer Thornton Tomasetti, Building Physics Thornton Tomasetti, Landscape A24 Landschaft, Traffic A24 Landschaft, Energy Efficiency, and Sustainability Transsolar, MEP Transsolar, and Fire Engineer Kunz - die innovativen Brandschutzplanner GmbH, collaborated to design the arena.
The WH-Arena is not just a venue for events, but also a unique architectural masterpiece that blends seamlessly with the environment. The concept focuses on creating a space that prioritizes sustainability and safety, especially in the face of global challenges such as pandemics and terrorism. This arena is a versatile and dynamic space that can adapt to a wide range of event programs, maximizing energy efficiency and sustainability. The WH-Arena is an urban catalyst, an iconic structure that integrates seamlessly into Vienna's cityscape, day and night.
The building's wooden skin acts as a protective shield, providing structural support while ensuring the building moves and grows in harmony with its surroundings. The internal part of the arena, designed in collaboration with local customs, will offer visitors a unique experience that celebrates the beauty and warmth of natural materials. Wood, a sustainable and natural material, will maximize use in the construction of the building.
The WH-Arena project is an innovative and forward-thinking approach to sustainable green architecture, creating a stunning landmark that promotes harmony between human activity and the environment. Lighting Designer Ateliers de l'éclairage, Lighting Artist Yann Kersalé, Rendering Sol, and 3D printing Xtrude.Berlin contributed to the project's realization. The project was initiated by Wien Holding and is a stage competition that aims to set a new benchmark for sustainable green architecture.
