This inner west Federation home was carefully crafted to include an expanse of living areas at the rear of the home. The contemporary extension opens out onto a garden perfect for a young family. The original character and charm of the home was retained with an emphasis on connection and integrity of the old and new. 
Uniquely crafted elements, custom made joinery and high quality fittings create a sophisticated palette. Thoughtful details successfully merge the old and the new paying homage to the finer details and workmanship of the original house. The materials selections layer the home in texture and warmth and celebrate the different eras of the residence. 

The clients were a young family who were keen to invigorate and update  their home whilst also maintaining the homes distinctive heritage features. The additions and alterations were sensitively completed to retain the old world charm of the house and create contemporary light filled spaces that complement the existing residence. 

The challenge was the combination of the new and the old and the treatment of materials and spaces where the two merged. For instance the threshold to the new work was marked with a stone trim piece in the floor where the new and old floorboards met. The new floor boards were colour matched and had a change in direction to  highlight the new and the old.

The original exterior of the home that faces the street was retained and refurbished to retain the heritage quality. The new additions at the rear of the property utilize zinc cladding and charred timber. These contemporary materials create a simple backdrop to the ornate and decorative house, and sit beautifully amongst greenery of the family garden. The timbe cladding is charred during manufacture and this creates a silky black texture on the timber.
