Zoo SP, one of the most significant tourist and historical sites in São Paulo, underwent a Masterplan development during the competition stage by the Biselli Katchborian office, in collaboration with Robert De Paauw. The proposed intervention reimagines the current space of the complex in the Parque das Fontes do Ipiranga, which includes the Botanical Garden, the Zoo, and the Zoo Safari, into an integrated and educational environment, fostering a better understanding of the relationship between humans and nature.
The new park concept introduced the renaming of the Botanical Garden to "Bio Flora" and the Zoo to "Bio Fauna," establishing a unified identity for these areas and promoting interaction between spaces. A central axis connects the different zones, revitalizing waterways and improving drainage, allowing the park to offer a richer and more educational experience about nature and its ecosystems.
With a strong commitment to sustainability, the project incorporates solutions such as reorganizing watercourses and implementing permeable pavements, enhancing soil permeability. The park’s mobility was designed to be inclusive, with bike paths, electric minibuses, and pedestrian- and wheelchair-accessible pathways, ensuring accessibility for all visitors. The use of renewable materials, such as engineered wood, is integrated into the design of kiosks and shelters, reinforcing the sustainable approach.
One of the masterplan’s main highlights is the creation of two large internal courtyards that serve as spaces for social interaction, leisure, and environmental learning. These courtyards are designed to promote smooth and safe circulation, reducing conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles. Additionally, the project includes new ticketing systems, bus stops, and parking areas, optimizing visitor flow and providing greater comfort.
Technology also plays a fundamental role in the park's new concept. The “Bio App,” an interactive platform, provides information about the park, animal feeding schedules, and allows visitors to purchase tickets and make reservations. QR codes distributed throughout the park offer educational content, enriching visitors' experiences with insights into biodiversity and the environment.
The masterplan also brings significant improvements to the areas dedicated to the complex’s flora and fauna. In the Botanical Garden, the plan envisions a scenic viewpoint and a renovated multipurpose space, as well as a redesigned Zoo that creates more natural and comfortable territories for the animals. The former Zoo farm is transformed into a new Safari area, featuring a hotel that provides an immersive and educational experience for visitors.
