HOUSE LAYANG

HOUSE LAYANG

Layang is located on the beautiful island of Lombok, Indonesia, just east of Bali. Known for its pristine beaches, stunning natural landscapes, and rich cultural heritage, Lombok offers a tranquil and authentic experience compared to its more famous neighbor. The island showcases a blend of Hindu and Islamic influences, reflected in its distinctive architecture, where beautiful mosques and temples can be found throughout.

The house is owned by two young twin brothers from Sweden, who share a close relationship, working together daily in their own company. Looking for a retreat away from Europe's cold winters, they chose to build a holiday home in Asia, where they could enjoy more time with family and escape to warmer climates.

With toddlers and an active family life, creating a child-friendly space with ample room for gatherings was essential. The design needed to incorporate large, open areas for family time, a BBQ, and a swimming pool, while also providing bedrooms that are close but private. The sloping terrain posed a unique design challenge, as flat surfaces were limited.

House Layang is perched on a steep hillside, anchored between two ridges that support the lower level where the bedrooms are located. This layout enabled the creation of a large, flat area above, accommodating the swimming pool and a spacious, open area sheltered by a metal and timber roof. Inspired by Indonesian architecture, the roof is reminiscent of the traditional layang-layang kites. The dark interior tones highlight the surrounding landscape, allowing the home to serve as a frame for the breathtaking views.

Nearly all elements in the home were custom-designed and crafted by our studio, from built-in pieces like beds, kitchens, and bathrooms, to loose furnishings such as sofas and dining tables. The main seating area features a custom sofa, a centerpiece alongside a hand-carved coffee table that brings an Indonesian touch to the space.
