Capital One’s new Tyson’s Corner, VA headquarters is - by design - a multi-skyscraper campus that adds to the region’s skyline and includes infrastructure updates to the surrounding trafficways, multi-use residential and commercial spaces, and a 1.5 acre greenspace for public use. The primary goal of the project is to co-locate the company’s 7000 local employees to a single campus and enhance their work-life balance while reducing or eliminating commuting. The project was conceived as a study of different alternatives for a refuge residence that at the same time can be replicated in different situations, such as countryside, beach or even in the same urbanized centers. Hence the proposal to make a modular structure in which it is easy to assemble and standardized manufacture, seeking greater precision and generating less waste, this makes our proposal sustainable and less aggressive with the environment. Loft 8B resides comfortably in the 497 GW Building, where we translated the architectural design of the cascading glass facade to the interior, with a folded bogwood spine that spatially organizes the apartment— separating and connecting, displaying and privatizing. The bogwood’s lit axis branches to the music room, guest bathroom, master bedroom, and bathroom. The interior also includes a blue-glass master bathroom, which contains an overflow bath and steam shower, and art storage areas, which are either within the bogwood spine or in rooms concealed behind pivoting walls. The plot is located in the village of Aguada de Cima (Águeda, Portugal) and is surrounded by agricultural and forestry lands. The terrain converges topographically to its central point, which rises slightly in relation to its limits and that’s where the building implants itself. Its composition is made of three gable roof volumes that intersect themselves at the same point and establish direct relations of connection and functionality.The building has two floors, one of them underground. The underground floor is a large storage that seeks to benefit from the thermal advantages of the contact with the soil. The Peter W. Rodino Jr. Federal Office Building is a 16 story, 467,550 square foot structure housing several government agencies, including the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services’ Regional Center, the General Services Administration, and the US Attorney’s Office.The original main-entry vestibule of this secured building consisted of two narrow entrances, with only one scanner in each and an oversized exit pathway between them. To alleviate the daily congestion and long visitor lines waiting to go through security, the vestibule was expanded outward to the building’s existing two-story exterior columns.
