Growing of things

This is an experience on creating the space for Chinese folk arts and crafts, a “weaving” activity originated from Chinese soil, and an organic visual form similar to growing of things. Look back again to grass-roots handicrafts in Chinese folk society in a bygone age, and wonder if we can seek for natural dialogue and blending with advanced modern space to re-embrace those handicrafts that sparkle humanistic instinct on the ground of modern space in China. In the past folk life of China, “weaving” was a common household handicraft offering a large number of assortments, neither made by skilled craftsmen, particularly in the light of its origin in the rural underclass, nor seen so exquisite as the “weaving&rdqu... Silver Linings Boutique Hotel

Bamboo Sea Village in Hufu Township, Yixing County is home to a well-known scenic spot inJiangnan (South Yangtze River Area). The Sea of Bamboo Park means just that: lush, gentle hills capped by numerous bamboos. The village sits in an environment of decent scale. However, different from the romantic perception most people have about country life on hillside, the village seems out of place in such picturesque surroundings. Only few of Jiangnan folk houses—traditional folk houses that used to be common in Jiangnan— are left. More commonplace on this prosperous land are houses with a Chinese-style window right next to Europeanpillars, or a marble arch window on a white wall topped by grey Chinese tiles. The reason? With the beautif... More

Collage Condo

This condominium renovation in Washington DC is theculmination of a multi-phase project that spanned a 2-yearperiod. The firm partners passed the project back andforth, each designing a new space, but working off theprevious one. This process resulted in an “architecturalcollage” - similar materials were utilized, while new oneswere introduced in eachphase. The spaces overlap andflow from one to the next, while also retaining their own character.   Three design strategies were employed:   1 - Layering: A limited palette of materials were set intodifferent spatial planes to operate as a series of distinctlayers.   2 - Framing: Materials and elements in the foreground frameothers in the distance, to create an... Nanshanli Hotel

The project is located in the South Bank Scenic Area of Chongqing City, China."Nanshanli" in Chinese means "Inside south mountain". The original site is a 20 mu old courtyard, which is a few random single buildings at the end of the last century. The terrain is very undulating and the vegetation is dense. Therefore, the rich level of natural environment is our greatest advantage, and the difficulty of old buildings transformation is our greatest challenge. One of the greatest characteristics of Chongqing is that the topographic elevation difference is very large, the topography is changeable, and it is a very three-dimensional city. The project plot is located in the mountains of the Nanan area, so it is named Nanshanli Hotel.... La Samaria Educational Institute

This particular public educational institution is located on the southern border of the city of Pereira on the Colombian central mountain range. Its geographical situation at the limits of the city promotes a new pole for urban development with a growing population that demands public facilities. The project is developed on one of these peaks looking to the canyon on the south and to a preexistent district on the north.Because the geometry of the plot lets little free space, the program is developed in a three-story building that runs from one extreme to the other. The classrooms are oriented either to the north or to the south in order to privilege the long distance view of the city center or the closer view of the urban border.
