For many years now, the Hunke family has been operating a successful jewellery and optician business within the inner city of Ludwigsburg, near Stuttgart. In order to retain their leading position in the region’s market and to lay a foundation for future generations, a consolidation of the jewellery, watch and optician departments was required. Three aging family-owned buildings were transformed into a sustainable and future-compliant retail store. Dachas is a housing complex located in Bariloche in a sloped site facing the Nahuel Huapi lake. The word Dachas comes from Russian, meaning country home, log cabin, small rest area in a rural setting. The site is limited in its upper and lower sides by streets hidden in a dense woodland area, a peculiar urban situation, in which the building plays a key role in opening the area and introducing the landscape into the site. In the middle of the woods, two inclined irregular objects, molded by the southern winds, mix with the existing pine trees of the site, framing the impressive lake backdrop and hinting the access into the complex. Israeli Architect and Designer Oshir Asaban was tasked with overhauling this two-story courtyard villa facing the national park.   Villa S.N.N was originally completed in the 1960s therefore drawing on oriental philosophy of naturalness and coexistence. This is the fifth factory/warehouse-type conversion we had the pleasure to work on. This particular live-work unit is located within an old yard building in Camberwell, South London. The 150sqm+ floor plate is surrounded by an unsightly post-modern apartment complex limiting its amount of external glazing to just two windows, a few old skylights and a glazed entrance which is overlooked by the communal courtyard. Whilst the existing building is full of beautiful features such as fair faced brickwork throughout and an exposed wood and steel roof structure, it consisted of just a small bathroom, a kitchen in a dark corner and a non-compliant sleeping deck. Located on a rain-drenched site in the rugged, north-western foothills of the Cascade Mountains, this modest, sustainable building has a big presence in a big landscape. Surrounded by dramatic, mountain peaks, the site slopes to the east and overlooks a large woodlot. Our clients wanted a building that had presence in and subservience to the wild landscape. This duality became the thematic tag that informed the design.   In order to preserve the rugged landscape, we limited the building’s footprint to a 30’ by 100’ rectangle. The new owners of this 1200 sq. Ft. Loft in the "Unity Building", a classified heritage building from 1913, have given us the opportunity to redevelop the space while highlighting the industrial aspect of the space. Originally a printing, graphic design and publishing companies, the "Unity Building"* is one of the first in Montréal to adopt the concrete floor slab, resting on "mushroom" columns, with capital are truncated pyramid.
