Brise soleil

A solid white form that contrasts with its immediate surroundings. This is the principle behind the design of Casa Bosque, located on a narrow lot within a horizontal condominium of attached houses. This white canvas, being homogeneous, does not evoke the subjective mental image of a house and allows for an open perception of what is seen, offering a complete reading of the volume, without areas of concentration or elements that “pull” the eye. The 1125 Joaquim building, designed by Perkins&Will São Paulo, is a sophisticated and innovative residential proposal in a privileged location in Itaim Bibi, just three blocks from Brazil's main financial center. The 25-floors project features striking integration with the urban landscape, using simple shapes, neutral colors and natural elements, such as wood and vegetation, to create an elegant and timeless look. The Maria Flor Inn is a boutique hotel with 12 rooms, located on the island of Fernando de Noronha, a Natural World Heritage (UNESCO, 2001). The project is the result of the collaboration between Priscilla Muller Studio and Solo Arquitetos, and it was conceived as a sponge of its context, seeking to absorb and integrate architecture and nature in a subtle, respectful and responsible way. The Terrain, in the interior of São Paulo, had a steep slope towards the back, whose orientation is north. The Oblique Pavilion is an ephemeral space, configured in a 12x9 area, located between three access streets at an event fair. The Panamericana house is composed of two overlapping horizontal blocks, with different materials. The metal brise soleil on the facades allow residents to control the degree of lighting, ventilation and privacy throughout the day, which can vary greatly. The same brise soleil used on the facades were also used indoors to control the degree of integration of rooms, such as living room and home theater. Using the same design reasoning in both outside and inside exemplifies the same importance we give to architecture and interior creations. Everything must be in harmony. The concept of the new Heideveld Primary School complex was borne from constraints experienced as part of the previous school location and layout as well as from the decanting strategy and programme, which was integral to the roll-out and construction process. The site is fairly small and the existing school operation had to be accommodated on site while the new school was being built. This gave rise to a compact and simple plan form, focused around a shared central courtyard, and two secondary undercover courtyard spaces, one for the foundation phase classes in a single storey block and the other for intermediate and senior phase classes in a double storey block. Du Noon Primary School is a replacement school, built as part of the Department of Basic Education’s Accelerated School Infrastructure Development Initiative (ASIDI) Programme.   The Du Noon Primary School site is located within very dense urban fabric, with properties fully built up, and the narrow streets lined with informal spaza shops, crèches, and informal house extensions. With open space in Du Noon being an absolute luxury, the streets are true public spaces, where, out of necessity, pedestrians take precedence over motor vehicles. They should be designed well beyond the idea of just learning spaces, but also as community centres, alive and open all day.
