Forest House

A wraparound extension of raw, generous spaces complements the refined, colourful rooms of a Victorian semi to support family life. David Grandorge After four years in the house the family of five wanted to retain the comfortable intimacy of the well-proportioned rooms but introduce the spatial generosity and experiential joy that they enjoy in the nearby Epping Forest. David Grandorge A single storey garage was removed and a set of new connected spaces wrapped around the side and rear of the house. A triple height kitchen sits at the heart of the home, pushing out into a garden room, and overlooked by a mezzanine studio with an attic room perched above. David Grandorge The front of the house responds to the decorum of the... More

Pearson House

An aging nineteen twenties bungalow has undergone a transformation for a retired couple who recently relocated to Southern California from New England. The brief called for the creation of a new, singular living and sleeping space that would have a meaningful connection to both the site and its history. This was to be executed with a minimal of means and as little disruption to the existing conditions as possible. Randi Bartosiak Interior partitions were removed to create an open and airy loft-type living and sleeping space from front to back along the west side of the house. The east side of the house was kept mostly intact, except for squaring off and adding a small bathroom to an awkwardly shaped back addition. The exterior wall of... More

T0 Sumibi Yakiniku | Shibuyanaka Sushi

The overall design for T0 Japanese cuisine brand is inspired by five Chinese elements - namely metal, wood, water, fire, and earth - which coincide with their different series of products. Through one entrance, there are two dining zones, and the water and fire concept is respectively adopted in T0渋谷中すし| 炭火焼肉 restaurant, an establishment combining OMAKASE sushi and charcoal fire roasts. First, for the fusion of two elements, the designers borrowed the concept of the traditional Japanese architectural wooden frame structure to build up and divide the interior space. Hei Nong Additionally, two circulations for sushi (water) and yakiniku (fire) are arranged in an irregular layout, with different dining zones also distinguished by differe... More

The Coyle

Located on a long peninsula extending south into Hood Canal, this vacation house for a Seattle family draws inspiration from its site and the client’s Danish roots. Using the clean, economical forms and materials of the classic Danish sommerhus as a starting point, the program is separated into three gabled structures whose composition carefully integrates with the site and maximizes its two distinct views. The simple forms, clad in dark stained cedar, sit quietly in the landscape, straddling the transition between dense Douglas fir and a small meadow that falls abruptly to the water. Alexander Canaria and Taylor Proctor The main public and private functions are split into two offset volumes joined by a common entry. The buildin... More

SPMA store

On ground floor of a 1930’s old house in Shanghai, atelier tao+c transformed the former residential space into a boutique retail space for SPMA. Wen Studio It is a typical lanehouse, the structure is made of load bearing brick walls and wooden floor. The layout is restricted by existing walls, with the rooms arranged one after another and give a strong sense of depth. The architect left the existing wooden ceiling and old doors intact, and the brick walls were preserved with white limewash. Wen Studio The renovation is not only about refurbishing the surface, also involves a series of strategy to intervene into the space based on the internal structure and the characteristics of the building itself. Historisches Archiv und Rheinisches Bildarchiv

A three-storey shell building hugs the archival documents protectively - the windowless, auratic 'shrine' rises from the elongated protective structure like a treasure house. Herne Hill House

Architectural studio TYPE has unveiled a distinct and characterful extension to an end-ofterrace, Victorian three-storey house in Herne Hill, south London. The airy and light-filled 45m² rear and side extension replaces a draughty and cold conservatory in the southfacing garden.   It carefully defines three distinct ground-floor spaces for cooking, dining and relaxing within a single room. Key to the project is an elemental use of self-finished materials that are inherently beautiful and practical. The homeowners approached TYPE after seeing a north London project designed by the architects. The brief called for a warm, inviting interior area and a connecting space to the large garden; a practical space for daily life, as well a... More

RC Kitchen

For this small renovation project, RC thoughtfully conceived of a new layout for the upper flat of a duplex. Building 305

Built for military force, Fort Worden stood as an armed overlook, protecting Puget Sound coastal cities and shipyards from invasion during both World Wars. Today it stands as a Lifelong Learning Campus, using its place on the edge of the Salish Sea to amplify connections between nature, art, and community.     Arthur Ross Following a master-planning process, the Fort’s warehouse district was prioritized as the greatest opportunity for investment, and the vision for Makers Square, a trio of renovated warehouse buildings, evolved. Building 305, at the heart of this district, was always a capstone structure for the Fort. Constructed in 1905, it was the first military building constructed at Fort Worden, serving as the Qua... Krownlab Headquarters

Tucked into the industrial disctrict of Northwest Portland, OR, the Krownlab building exemplifies creative repurposing of a 1930's warehouse.  The board formed concrete structure was originally used for producing braided steel cable for the shipping industry.  Beams and joists were sand-blasted to reveal old growth Douglas Fir, balancing the predominance of concrete and glass.  An open office floor plan was achieved by using fixed and sliding glass panels and half-wall partitions.  Krownlab sliding door hardware was used for entryway, conference room, and private meeting rooms. A white paper is available on the Krownlab website (krownlab.com), detailing the creative use of office space. Caption Caption Cap... More
