For this small renovation project, RC thoughtfully conceived of a new layout for the upper flat of a duplex. Aside from minor interventions like the refinishing of floors, renovating bathrooms, and painting throughout, the primary design move was the relocation of the kitchen from the rear of the home to the front where it now functions as a primary living space and is conveniently located adjacent to the home’s other generous living areas.
Large new openings were created to interconnect the kitchen with the living, dining, and arrival areas. New openings were cased in millwork to match the home’s original detailing.
The design of the kitchen’s Douglas fir face frame cabinetry and the incorporation of Poul Cadovius’s Royal Shelving System was carefully detailed as furniture to serve the everyday functional requirements of a heavily used working kitchen.
