The design is based on the interplay of core and envelope: a stair core of bush-hammered exposed concrete forms the structural backbone, while a skin of glass and black-stained timber ensures transparency. Located in the mountainous region of Wenzhou, F.X. Mayr will be the first holistic eco-wellness retreat in China. Drawing inspiration from its beautiful location - the flow of the secluded hills that IS the site – the building aims to touch the earth lightly. We envisioned a building, perched up off the ground , where nature and life within it, can continue to flow beneath it. Situated in a historic neighborhood shaped by mid-century modernism, the design takes a conservative approach—aiming not to stand out, but to belong. Since the building will open in the spring of 2018, before the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, we thought it necessary to design the building with “JAPANESE STYLE” as the core, considering the response of inbound customers. Akasaka, the site of the building, is a very chaotic city with convenient transportation, a business scene, entertainment, and deep spots.
